7 Eco-friendly Laundry Hacks for More Sustainable Washing

No matter how much we try, doing the laundry is a house chore that we can never avoid.

This activity could release a lot of pollutants into the environment if you don’t take sustainable washing seriously.

To protect your environment from being polluted with harmful substances, you should decide to start practicing sustainable washing.

Are you thinking of how to do laundry sustainably? These 7 eco-friendly laundry hacks will help you attain that in no time.

Contents

1. Wash With Cold Water

Doing your laundry with cold water or water at room temperature is more eco-friendly than using hot water.

When you use cold water to do your laundry, it will save you from consuming a lot of energy because you won’t have to heat water.

Also, using cold water will definitely save you from paying a lot of money for electricity bills.

Coldwater is also healthy for your clothes, unlike hot water that shrinks your clothes.

If you want your clothes to last longer, then you should consider using cold water instead of hot water.

Wear Your Clothes More Than Once

Another way you can practice sustainable washing is by wearing your clothes more than once.

You should only wash your clothes when they are actually dirty. But if they are your workout clothes, you can wash them every day because of the sweat or you can choose to hang them up until you want to wear them again.

Wearing your clothes more than once will save you from consuming so much energy and detergent.

3. Go for Laundry Detergent Sheets

A laundry detergent sheet contains every necessary cleaning ingredient suspended in a biodegradable and dissolvable resin that you just add to your regular wash cycle just like you use liquid or powder detergents.

The only difference is that it does not have an environmental footprint or chemical.

Powder, liquid, and sheets are all detergents, but they are not all made the same way.

Powder and liquid detergents are seen in just almost all houses worldwide, but if you are very much concerned about keeping the world safe for us, then you should opt for laundry detergent sheets.

4. Use Eco-friendly Laundry Detergents

If you still decide to use detergents, then you should start using eco-friendly laundry detergents. Using an eco-friendly laundry detergent will help you avoid chemical pollution and it will keep your clothes clean and fresh.

Apart from saving the planet, using an eco-friendly detergent sheet can save your clothes from damage and reduce irritation on your sensitive skin.

5. Always Do Full Loads

Don’t always be in a hurry to wash your clothes, wait until they are plenty before you wash them.

Besides, your washing machine will consume the same amounts of energy and water irrespective of the number of clothes in it.

Most energy-efficient washing machines use more than twenty-five gallons of water per cycle.

6. Air-dry Your Clothes

Air-drying your clothes instead of using the dryer is another eco-friendly hack you should not take for granted.

One of the best times you can air-dry your clothes is during hot summer.

Air-drying your clothes will help the sun to bleach out common stains and also kill harmful bacteria on your clothes.

If you want your clothes to smell nice, fresh, and last longer, you should start air-drying them instead of always using your dryer. What else do you stand to gain from air-drying your clothes?

It will prevent you from consuming a lot of energy thus reducing the amount of money you spend on the electricity bill. Plus, air-drying your clothes will prevent you from releasing toxic fumes into the air.

If you feel like drying your clothes will get them wrinkled and stiff, you can avoid that by shaking them very well before hanging them up.

Also, ensure they are evenly spaced out so air can easily circulate.

7. Avoid Using Fabric Softener

This is another eco-friendly laundry hack that you should adopt. The sad thing about fabric softeners is that they are not so different from regular detergents — there are a lot of harmful chemicals in them.

They are indeed very effective in softening your clothes but they will pollute your water.

There are greener alternatives that you can use instead of using fabric softeners.

You could decide to put vinegar in your washing machine when you are doing your laundry–it will serve as a softening agent.

Or you could use wool dryer balls for softening your clothes in the dryer.

Conclusion

We believe that you found these seven eco-friendly laundry hacks helpful.

Now is the best time to start practicing sustainable washing if you want your environment to be free from pollutants.
