Moving to Canterbury may just be one of the best decisions you ever make! Canterbury is a gorgeous historical city found in Kent, England.

Here, you get to experience their rich culture and meet friendly people. With an excellent transportation link and public amenities, you can’t ask for more as a resident of Canterbury.

Canterbury has a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Here, you will find various stalls and businesses scattered throughout the area. If you’re business-minded, Canterbury is a great place to start.

Moving to Canterbury, however, or for any location for that matter, is not as easy as it seems. This is why many residents resort to renting a storage unit. A storage unit gives a lot of convenience for a small cost.

What’s great about storage units is that it is not a one-time service. You have the opportunity to extend your lease.

By doing such, you get to store your items in a remote but secure location. This way, your house won’t be as cluttered as it would normally be.

If you’re sold on the idea of storage units, then read here to find out what you can and cannot keep inside self storage units.

Self Storage Units in Canterbury

Take note that these are the general rules. Your storage facility in Canterbury may or may not have these rules. It’s best to talk with the site manager for a clear list of things that you’re allowed to store inside your storage unit.

If you need any help to move your belongings, storage facilities offer free collection services. Meanwhile, if you are moving to your new home, read here for more tips on preparing your home for moving in!

Things You Can Keep

1. Furniture

Furniture is very much welcome in storage units. This is one of the most common things stored inside storage units, especially when homeowners are renovating their houses.

When you’re storing furniture, keep in mind that it should be cleaned and disassembled. Cleaning your furniture is recommended so you don’t bring in dust and dirt inside your storage unit.

Disassembling your furniture is for easier transit and storing.

2. Appliances and Electronic Gadgets

Appliances and electronics are also some of the common things people kept in storage. These items are safe in storage as long as they are stored well.

As long as you don’t bring in moisture, your electronics will be fine. Storage facilities are dry and enclosed, so appliances and electronics are safe.

3. Clothes and Beddings

Clothes and beddings are bulky and perfect to be stored in self storage units. Seasonal clothes and extra bedding take up so much closet space, leaving you little room for your actual clothes.

By shipping them off to storage, they won’t take half of your closet and you’ll have more space for your shopping sprees. As long as you organize your unit, you’ll easily access your beddings without hassle.

Things You Cannot Keep

1. Anything Alive

Storage units are for your items. In case it’s not clear, they are not a place for living things. These enclosed spaces are not suitable for any living things such as your pet, plants, or yourself.

You can’t sleep inside your storage unit. Living inside the storage unit is prohibited, and once you are caught, you will be evicted from the property.

Storage units have no water, natural light, and locked from the outside, so it is unsafe for pets and plants. You’re giving them a death sentence by storing them inside storage.

At the same time, plants will attract vermin and pests while pets urinate and defecate which will stink up your unit.

2. Flammable Items

Flammable items are a risk to any establishment. These are prone to explosion and fire, so it is something that storage facilities do not welcome. Some of these flammable items are:

  • Propane Tanks
  • Aerosols
  • Lighter fluid
  • Gasoline
  • Fireworks
  • Corrosive Wastes
  • Medical Wastes
  • Paint
  • Explosives
  • Kerosene Lamps

None of these are allowed inside storage units. The storage facility must be secure at all times and storing this stuff inside will compromise that safety.

3. Perishable Food

Storage facilities do not accept any perishable food. This is because it may contaminate the entire unit and also attract animals and pests.

Food also spoils after a few days or even hours. It can also produce a horrible smell when spoiled, so perishable food is a concern.

4. Wet Items

Any wet items are not allowed on the premises. Storage units are concrete and made of steel. However, it can be prone to mould and rust due to wet items.

So to not compromise the entire facility, better not keep wet things inside the self storage unit. At the same time, wet items will incorporate moisture into the air which could encourage the growth of mildew.

5. Hazardous Items

Hazardous items are also prone to explosion, fire, and any form of destruction to property. These items can be:

  • Cleaning products
  • Paint thinner
  • Pesticides
  • Bleach
  • Fertilizer
  • Nail Polish
