There is common anxiety attached to washing favorite pieces area rug, especially when a significant amount of hard-earned money has been spent. The price of rugs is frequently linked to the fact that it is made of natural fibers, which are frequently thought to be more difficult to wash than their synthetic counterparts.

Sheepskin rug is an art and now that you have bought this art piece you need to be an artist while cleaning or caring for it. However, cleaning sheepskin rug or shaggy rug can get quite overwhelming sometimes thus, we won’t recommend you to wash them but rather tend to spot stains and keep them generally clean always.

Tips to Keep Sheepskin Rug Clean

Sheepskin can be washed, however, water washing your sheepskin rug should be your last choice when it comes to approaching dirt or a spill as it may spoil the look of your rug. Here are a few tips to keep a sheepskin rug clean:

1. Shaking

The first and foremost thing you need to have is the habit of shaking the rug regularly. You may also consider using a wire wool comb or a dog comb to brush the fibers to reduce matting and restore luster.

2. Vacuum

The next thing you need to take into consideration is to vacuum. Rugs love regular maintenance and vacuuming. If you stick to this routine and combine it with a good shake and air them out in indirect sunlight, you won’t need to do much else to keep your sheepskin rug clean.

3. Spot Cleaning

If you, however, come across an unplanned accident, which we all do from time to time, the most important thing to remember is to wipe out any liquids with paper towels and lift any solids with a dull knife, spoon, or spatula immediately as soon as the spill happen so that it doesn’t spread.

Also, avoid throwing water or other liquids directly on a stain as it will spread the stain and may damage the sheepskin backing. Instead, wipe out the excess liquid with a clean dry towel or paper towels before applying a commercial wet stain remover.

4. Use Baking Soda to Reduce Odors

If your sheepskin rug is smelling stale, generously sprinkle it with dry baking soda. Work it into the fibers with your hands or a comb. Allow the baking soda to sit on the rug for at least two hours, preferably overnight. Shake or vacuum the rug to remove the baking soda, and comb the fibres to lift them.

5. Read the Care Label Before Washing

Rugs have labels for the same reason that clothes do. Look for the care label on a sheepskin rug before washing it as it may help you to make wiser choices about cleaning and caring for the rug. Reading care label instructions will tell you how to clean sheepskin rug, whether it is machine-washable, and how often the manufacturer suggests.

Can a Sheepskin Rug Go in the Washing Machine?

It may be tempting to throw your sheepskin rug in the washing machine, but if you want your rug to look lush for years to come, take the time to care for your sheepskin products. Even on a cold, delicate cycle, being completely submerged in water will have an effect on the appearance of a sheepskin rug.

The wool fibers will come up beautifully, but the underside skin will harden and cause your rug to lose its original shape. A sheepskin rug can withstand a few washes over the course of its life with you, but be aware that it may gain some extra character in the process.

Sheepskin Rug Maintenance

The better you care for your rug, the less cleaning sheepskin rug will require – prevention is truly better than cure in this case!

1. Regular Brushing

Sheepskin also benefits from regular brushing with a sheepskin brush and shaking to remove stuck dust – but be gentle; brush it in the same way you would brush a pet – without being too harsh or pulling at the hair. Brushing too hard will cause your rug to be thin over time.

2. Keep It Dry

Sheepskin does not tolerate damp conditions, so keep it out of cold, damp rooms. Too much damp will cause the sides to curl up, so air them out in indirect sunlight if they are damp. Remember not to place them in direct sunlight ever.

What Makes Sheepskin Rugs Special?

People adore sheepskin rugs for their natural beauty and the way it feels against your bare feet, but it is also unique in a number of ways. It is, for example, an excellent choice for people who have health issues. These rugs are ideal for the home because the resilient fibers are hypoallergenic and anti-bacterial.

Sheepskin rugs are also prized for their longevity. Sheepskins can keep floors warm for 15 years or more if cared for properly. Sheepskin are eco-friendly rugs. Also, sheepskin is a biodegradable and environmentally friendly material. Known for their soft and fluffy texture, sheepskin rug make a great addition to almost any area of the home.
