Having a drab home is on nobody’s to-do list. We all want to have living spaces that look brilliant and great to relax in, do everything that we need them to do, or inspire us when we are working.
A sure-fire way to create an environment that keeps you at your best is to do it yourself.
Now, this doesn’t mean you need to learn carpentry, or how to plumb, but you can absolutely begin picking and choosing elements to go into your rooms – even if you may need a hand installing them.
Some people prefer an interior designer, but this list is for all those folks out there that want to do their interior design themselves (and have it still look good). Without further ado, here are some ideas to get you started.

Custom Light Switches
This is such an underrated idea that too many people pass up on. When designing a room, you want all the accents to match the overall colour scheme. Otherwise, you may end up with a hotch-potch DIY job that can look a little bit too funky.
You could buy in some different coloured light switch panels, or if you are artistically inclined, use permanent markers to design it yourself!
Accent Your Skirting Boards
Speaking of room accents, every room will have some kind of skirting board. This could be a decorative one, a bland, flat one, it doesn’t matter all that much – unless you want to change it.
You can use your skirting boards to really bring your room to life, especially if you have gone for a two-tone colour palette. Otherwise, painting them neutral colours can add a little bit of contrast.
Colours like black, different shades of brown (or varnish for wood), or neutral shades of white, peach usually go down well. Sticking with accents and you can;
Match Your Radiators
This is vital for that extra bit of attention to detail that can make a room pop. Many folks opt to conceal radiator units, which is an option, but using the radiator as a stylistic element is wonderful!
Getting brand new radiators – even some designer models – would be ideal to round off a DIY interior design overhaul. But for those on a budget that may not be possible.
A good alternative is to recoat your radiator with a shade of paint to match your other accents (like skirting) and match up your radiator valve while you are at it.
Trade radiators have an excellent range of radiator valves including smart tech thermostatic radiator valves!
Re-Design Your Doors
But accenting doesn’t have to be all about skirting, you can extend the aesthetic to your doors too. Most wooden doors will have grooves or carving on them that can be highlighted with varnish or paint.
Again, if you have a two-tone room this can really make the door pop and match your room’s style.
Lastly, don’t forget those door handles! Find some that go with your home’s vision, be it modern or contemporary, and build that into your new interior design.
