6 Things to Consider When Buying Art for Your Home
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Picking the best art for your home can feel overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time shopping for art.

You’ll want to know how to pick pieces you love without emptying your bank account. Knowing where to buy art can be challenging too.

So, we put together this quick guide for you to use! You’ll learn about the six most essential things to consider when buying art for your home. Let’s get started.

  • 1 1. Check Out All Your Options
  • 2 2. Know Where to Shop
  • 3 3. Don’t Forget To Budget
  • 4 4. Think About All the Rooms
  • 5 5. Measure Your Display Space
  • 6 6. Know How To Choose Frames
  • 7 Do You Love the Art?

1. Check Out All Your Options

First, you must spend time considering all the different types and styles of art that are available to you.

Many people think of paintings first, but art can be sculptures, prints, and much more.

You’ll want to think about your space, then decide what art form (painting, sculpture, etc.) would look the best there.

After deciding on the art form you want, you’ll want to check out the different styles of art there are.

For instance, impressionism and abstract art look very different from one another. You might find that you like a particular art style more than others.

Overall, you shouldn’t buy the first piece of art that you find until you’ve had a chance to review all of your options first.

Buying art is an investment, so you don’t want to rush into purchasing anything.

2. Know Where to Shop

Next, you’ll want to know where to buy art. You’ll have countless options, but many people enjoy visiting art galleries in person.

It’s an excellent opportunity to see the pieces before you buy, allowing you to imagine how they’ll fit in your home.

You can usually find local art galleries by searching online or keeping an eye out for brochures and other posts in your area.

However, that doesn’t mean you only need to buy art in person. You can also find countless stunning, unique pieces online.

Shopping online for art is also convenient and lets you consider your options from the comfort of your home.

You can buy impressionism art online, letting you browse and compare prices easily. You’ll find even more art to choose from in online galleries.

3. Don’t Forget To Budget

High-quality art isn’t cheap, so you’ll need to make sure that you set a budget for yourself.

While it’s okay to go somewhat above your budget when you find a piece you love, it’s good to try to stay within the range you set as much as possible.

When you start shopping before setting a budget, it can be easy to go overboard with spending.

You also need to ensure your budget includes the cost of frames or other items you need to come with the purchase. Some pieces will also need regular maintenance.

On average, you should spend between $150 and $850 for wall art. This amount lets you buy some unique, beautiful pieces that you can use to decorate around the home.

However, you can always budget for more than that if you want to.

In short, you’ll want to set a budget that you can stick to. Different art mediums can cost more than others, and some artists will also be more expensive— making research on your part essential.

4. Think About All the Rooms

Next, you won’t want to forget about decorating all the rooms in your home.

Many people buy art for their living rooms but forget about their bedrooms and bathrooms, which can make them feel very bare in comparison.

You’ll instead want a few pieces of art for all the rooms in your home. You don’t need to buy them all at once, and they don’t need to be in the same style or medium either.

Many people love choosing vastly different pieces to decorate other rooms.

That said, you’ll want to put your favorite pieces on display in the rooms where people will see them the most.

You’ll want to put your best art in the living room. Then, you can display more personal pieces in your bedroom, where you’ll see them more often.

Overall, don’t forget about the other rooms in your home. Adding art to every room can make your home feel fresh and new without renovating.

5. Measure Your Display Space

Before you start shopping for art, reviewing what space you have for art in your home is good.

You wouldn’t want to invest in a beautiful painting only to discover that you don’t have the room for it or it doesn’t fit on your wall as well as you’d hoped.

So, you’ll want to measure the space you have. It’s best to write down the dimensions so you can easily compare them with the size of the art you’re buying.

If you’re purchasing multiple pieces of art to hang, you’ll also want to think about how they’ll look together on the wall.

When you know the size of the art ahead of time, you can make a plan on how you’ll display it before the art arrives.

You can measure large pieces of paper and cut them down to the size of the art, then arrange them on your wall.

Doing so is a great way to organize your art before adding any wall hangers, especially if they’re permanent.

Buying art that doesn’t fit in your home is an awful feeling! While you usually can find somewhere else to put it, it’s always best to measure what space you have ahead of time.

6. Know How To Choose Frames

All too often, people buy random frames, but they end up not looking nice with the art.

Think about the art and how it’ll look with various frames. If you’re unsure, neutral frames are best because they won’t distract attention from the art.

Then, check that the frames will look nice with other nearby frames.

Do You Love the Art?

Above all else, you’ll want to consider how much you enjoy the piece.

You should pick art that you love and that means something to you. That way, you can feel inspired every time that you see it.
