Is Velour Carpet Good? Evaluating the Pros and Cons

Carpet background. Striped carpets in different colors.

The idea of having a soft, luxurious carpet to walk on every day is appealing to most people.

But not all carpets are created equal.

There are pros and cons associated with any type of carpet you choose for your home or office space, and velour carpets are no different.

Velour or velvet carpet is an excellent choice for high traffic areas.

Plus, its plush feel and low cost compared to other types of carpets are the main reasons it has been around and has grown in popularity for so many years.

However, like any other carpet, velour also comes with some drawbacks that should be considered before buying it for your home or office space.

What Is Velour Carpet?

Velour or velvet pile carpet is unique because of its softness and texture. It’s made of your typical carpet pile, but the fuzziness and plushness come from an extra dense weave.

Velour carpets can be used in homes for bedroom floors or living room walls to add a soft touch.

In addition, they’re often found in hotels because they help reduce noise levels since sound doesn’t bounce off them as much.

Pros of Velour Carpet

As well known and loved by many, Velour carpet has many advantages that make it an attractive option for homeowners.

Below are some of the most common reasons velour carpet is a popular choice:

1. Easy To Clean

The fine fibers that make up a velour carpet make it easier to clean than other carpets.

With less friction, dirt and dust particles can be more easily brushed away from the surface.

These particles don’t embed themselves into the fabric like in looped or napped rug materials with higher pile heights.

2. Durability

One of the most significant benefits velour carpets have to offer is their durability.

The yarns used in making this type of carpet are tightly woven for a more durable design and construction that lasts longer.

They don’t wear down quickly over time like other types of carpets do.

The tight weave also means it will be less likely for your pet’s claws to catch while they’re running around on the carpet, which will reduce the chances of them making any accidental tears or marks in it.

3. It’s Comfortable on Your Feet

Velour carpet is more comfortable to walk on compared to other carpets, which can be uncomfortable for you when you’re walking across them barefoot.

Because the material is thick, it’s ideal for people with sensitive feet.

It’s also easy on the knees if you’re kneeling to vacuum or do other chores because it absorbs pressure well.

4. It’s Available in Many Colors, Patterns, and Styles

Carpets also change the vibe and ambiance of a room. Some homeowners may even choose to blend their carpet’s color to match their walls.

Velour carpet is available in many colors and patterns, giving you a lot of variety to choose from.

For example, you can find plain velour with just one color or pattern, striped velour with different colors running across the rug’s surface, velour with faint animal prints like leopard print, and even styled-down versions.

This wide variety means you can find a carpet to fit the personality of your home, whether it’s calming, bold, or exciting.

5. The Backing Is Designed for Soundproofing

Velour carpet is well-known for its soundproofing qualities.

The backing of the carpet fiber has an anti-vibration design that absorbs noise such as footsteps and voices.

This means that your conversations will be more private even if you’re in a room with thin walls.

It also means that you can have a conversation in your living room without the noise of children playing upstairs being heard downstairs, or vice versa.

The soundproofing feature is one of velour carpet’s most underrated features because it has many practical benefits to homeowners interested in making their home office as productive and efficient as possible or those who want to have peace in their home.

 6. Slid-Proof Surface

Comfort and design shouldn’t be your only main priority when choosing a carpet; you also have to consider safety, especially if it’s the carpet for your stairs.

Velour carpets usually have a low pile or are felted to give you that luxurious feeling on your feet.

It also makes them great for slippery surfaces since they provide some grip so that you don’t slide around as much when walking over them.

This characteristic of a velour carpet makes it more suitable for families with kids and the elderly who may be more prone to slip and fall accidents.

Cons of Velour Carpet

Velour carpeting may look great, but there are a few cons to consider before making the purchase:

1. Higher Risk of Watermarking

Velour carpets can be made out of various materials, and some are more prone to watermarking.

Watermarking happens when liquid penetrates the surface of the carpet and leaves a visible stain.

It’s more likely to occur with velour carpets because they’re made from materials that allow liquid to penetrate them easier.

If you spill something on your couch, it’s not as big a deal.

But if you make a mess in an area where velour carpeting is installed, you’ll be dealing with a stain that won’t want to go away.

In addition, if your home suffers from high humidity levels or has pets prone to accidents, then the risk of watermarking will also increase.

 2. Velour Carpet Can Be Easily Indented

Because velour carpet is so soft, it can easily be indented by heavy furniture.

Heavy objects may leave a permanent indentation in the fabric, which may not go away by itself over time.

Some people won’t be deterred by this too much, though others may want to keep heavier furniture away from the carpet.

Final Words

Velour carpet is a good option, depending on the preferences of the person who’s using it.

If watermarking and indentions aren’t a big deal for you, then you’ll enjoy the numerous benefits that a velour carpet offers.

It has the durability that everyone wants for a carpet, plus the comfort it can give on your feet.

It has various colors and styles, so you have many options to choose from. The soundproofing can also provide a huge advantage.
