The fact that metaverse is already here or is just about to get here is something that you must have heard from hundreds, if not thousands, of people who have been echoing about its fated arrival.
Fortunately for us, it is indeed the next step of the internet. What really matters to us how we end up reacting to it.
This is where AR and VR come in. But what about the metaverse?
Let us find out. But before we do that, let’s just quickly understand what AR and VR are.

AR vs VR
AR (augmented reality) is the technology that allows you to project a virtual element onto the real world.
VR (virtual reality) is the technology that facilitates complete immersion.
For that, you need to know what VR headset should I buy to completely immerse yourself in the virtual world, which is far from reality, but somewhat relates to the products and services that you use in the real world or in everyday life.
This is made possible using a special pair of glasses.
The notable difference between the two is the fact that AR “complements” your reality by projecting digital images or animations, and VR “displaces” your reality by placing you in an entirely different physical space – at-least that is the impression that it gives.
AR/VR & Their Connection With Blockchain
Let us assume that in the metaverse exists a powerful corporation by a fitting name, E. Corp (taken from the series, Mr. Robot).
It commands the profits in the metaverse and dictates policies that everyone must adhere to or face eventual removal.
But you are a nerdy researcher like me – who inadvertently finds out about the true nature of the people running the corporation: they are all devils.
You call for a Resistance and enlighten them about your findings and encourage them to join forces against the corporation.
Eventually, news about what you are doing spreads and finally Mr E. (the CEO) finds out.
He naturally issues an order to kill you. Can they kill you in the metaverse?
No, but they can delete you. And that’s exactly they do. Thus, you are removed from the metaverse, forever.
Sounds like the next script for a TV drama. But we can discredit that story – because it cannot happen.
The metaverse runs on blockchain, which means your identity (once loaded on to the blockchain) can never be deleted.
Can Nothing Be Deleted That Is Present on the Blockchain?
Yes, nothing can be deleted. Let us say that you purchase something in the metaverse – let’s assume that it is a piece of art.
Now, when you make the payment using the accepted cryptocurrency, you are essentially recording your transaction of transferring funds from you to the seller on the blockchain.
Once that happens, the token that points to the piece of art gets transferred to you, and this transaction too is recorded on the blockchain.
Thus, whatever you buy in the metaverse (or in a decentralized framework), will forever be yours unless you decide to transfer it to someone else.
Remember that, on the blockchain, transactions are recorded as transfers – going from point A (giver/receiver) to point B (receiver/giver).
How Does AR/VR Revolutionise Our Experience of the Metaverse??
Virtual reality headsets will place you in the metaverse, which means that you will be inside the world rather than watching a third person on the screen.
Add to it the technology of haptic feedback and you’ll sense every movement and every touch on your body in real time.
While the technology that enables you to have a full-immersion experience in a metaverse is still being developed, the idea behind it is breathtaking.
Imagine sitting in your office wearing a cool and funky pair of glasses.
Whilst on the phone talking to the client, you realize that the floor beneath you is starting to crumble.
The table on which you had comfortably placed your hand suddenly falls into a pit. And you see yourself flying in the sky alongside birds!
Stretch your imagination as wild as possible, and AR will make it possible. The idea with AR would be to cast onto the real world a projection of the metaverse.
Thus, if you see a wide field/park, then with AR, a music hall can be projected onto the field in real-time.
You might even be joined by a friend who’d be watching the same concert!
Closing Thoughts
The world is leaping towards the future. Not long ago, our evening discussions were fuelled by our imagination and how we perceived the “virtual” world would look like.
And now, we are slowly progressing towards building that world.
While the metaverse experience seems to be limited to our computer screens now, but as the tech behind VR improves (along with the network, 5G) we will experience an alternate universe like never before.
