4 Signs Your HVAC Unit Needs a Duct Replacement
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system is a staple appliance in most American homes, keeping occupants toasty and warm during the winter season and cool during the sweltering hot summers.

Generally, your home’s heating and air conditioning system comprises numerous parts to ensure comfortable indoor temperatures all year round. One of the most critical parts of this system is the network of air ducts running around your home, which plays a crucial role in ensuring your HVAC’s performance efficiency.

HVAC Ductwork: What is It?

Air ducts are the hidden system in your home that circulates air. These ducts are connected to your HVAC unit, which filters, then cools or heats your home’s air before sending it off. As such, air ducts are a critical part of your HVAC system, ensuring good indoor quality and delivering treated air to every room in your home.

If the ductwork becomes damaged or poorly connected, air pressure is lost, and your comfort level will drop significantly. As such, it’s essential to learn and understand any signs of damage or wear telling you to inspect and replace this duct network.

Signs You Need an Air Duct Replacement

A malfunctioning air duct will have several warning signs vying for your attention. Here are some of them to determine if your duct needs replacement.

1. Sudden Increase in Energy Bills

Generally, your HVAC system uses more electricity than any other system in your home. However, if there’s an issue within your air ducts, you’ll see it reflected on your monthly electric bills.

If your energy bill suddenly increases, this could be a sign of a blockage or leak in your ductwork. According to statistics, almost 20% of treated air can be lost due to holes and damage in your air ducts. With the air leaking, your HVAC becomes inefficient, pushing it harder to cool or heat your home. This results in higher energy bills. Thus, it’s safe to say that a leaking air duct is one of the leading energy wasters in homes.

However, between the rising energy cost and other appliances and systems in your home, how do you know if your HVAC ductwork is the cause of the sudden spike in your energy bills? Do an energy audit to monitor and manage your energy use. If it points to your HVAC system, consider calling a contractor to inspect your air ducts. If ductwork repairs haven’t done anything to bring your energy bills down, it’s time to replace your air ducts to ensure higher efficiency.

2. Uneven Temperatures

If you feel nice and warm in your bedroom only to be greeted with colder temperatures when you go to the living room, faulty ductwork is often the culprit. Generally, your air ducts may have holes or leaks preventing the system from properly cooling or heating your home.

If the damage is intensive, you’ll notice inefficient heating and cooling within your homes. Consider using an indoor thermometer to check the temperature in your home. If it’s out of the norm, consider calling a professional to replace your ductwork.

3. Old Age

With regular maintenance, your HVAC ductwork can last 10-15 years. However, like any appliance or system, once your ductwork reaches its recommended lifespan, you can expect several issues requiring you to replace the whole system.

Over time, joints, seals, seams, and the air ducts themselves can wear down and become more vulnerable to damage. As such, experts recommend having your HVAC ductwork checked at least every five years and replacing them when they reach its designated lifespan. This can help avoid major problems like gaps, pest infestation, or even collapsed sections of air ducts.

4. Poor Indoor Air Quality

Your HVAC system is responsible for improving the overall air quality in your home. However, if you notice more dust in your home recently or your allergic symptoms seem to worsen, this can indicate a faulty air duct that needs replacement.

If your air ducts haven’t been professionally cleaned for a while, they can accumulate a lot of dirt, dust, pollen, and other pollutants from the air. If too much accumulation occurs, your air duct will start re-circulating these particles into the air. In addition, holes and gaps in your air duct may allow pests or moisture into the pipes, causing mold growth or releasing bacteria and viruses into your air.

Generally, you can start by replacing your air filter to improve indoor air quality. However, if the problem persists, you may need to replace your HVAC ductwork to improve overall air quality.

Takeaway

A faulty or malfunctioning HVAC ductwork can cause ineffective heating and cooling, making your indoor space uncomfortable. It also comes with several consequences, including increased energy bills, risks of respiratory-related illnesses, and odors around the house.

If you notice any of the above signs, consider calling the experts immediately to have your ductwork inspected and replaced, if necessary.
