8 Most Common Home Issues That Crop Up in Summer
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The summer season is a time to enjoy the outdoors, hold cookouts, and spend time with friends and family.

It’s the season you’ve eagerly awaited all year long. However, along with the warmer weather and longer days, summer also brings a few challenges.

These issues can quickly put a damper on your fun when not addressed. They include:

1. Air Conditioning Problems

One of the most common summertime home issues is an air conditioner that isn’t working correctly.

It might not evenly cool your home, or it could break down completely. Have your air conditioner professionally serviced annually or as needed.

The effort will keep it in good condition and prevent costly repairs or replacements down the road.

Schedule air conditioner repair if you detect any problems such as leaks, strange smells, or reduced airflow.

2. Pest Infestations

Summer is also prime time for pests. Insects are more active in warm weather, making them more likely to get into your home.

Ants, cockroaches, mosquitoes, and flies are all typical summer pests.

To keep pests out, seal cracks and holes in your home’s exterior, and make sure screens on doors and windows are intact.

Use pest control methods such as traps, sprays, and baits to eliminate those already made their way inside.

Seek professional help if you’re struggling to get rid of pests.

3. Lawn Care Issues

Your lawn needs special care during the summer months to stay green and healthy.

Water it regularly, mow to the proper height, and fertilize as needed. These simple steps will help your lawn withstand the heat and look its best all season long.

Besides this, deal with common summer lawn problems such as weeds, crabgrass, and brown patches.

Use proper products and techniques to address the issues without damaging the lawn.

4. Pool Maintenance

Pools require regular maintenance to stay clean and safe. Skim the surface daily to remove leaves and other debris.

Test the water chemistry and adjust it to maintain a pH level between 7 and 7.6. Vacuum the pool weekly, and brush the walls and floor as needed.

Additionally, clean the filter monthly or as directed by the manufacturer. Don’t forget to have the pool professionally serviced at least once a year.

5. Clogged Gutters

Trees and plants grow and shed leaves during the summer months. Some of these leaves find their way into gutters.

Clogged gutters are unable to drain water away from your home correctly. This can lead to water damage, leaks, and foundation problems.

To avoid this, clean your gutters at least twice a year. You can do this yourself or hire a professional.

6. Allergens and Irritants

Summer allergies are caused by pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds. They cause sneezing, itchy eyes, headaches, and a runny nose.

To reduce allergies, stay indoors when pollen counts are high.

Keep windows and doors closed as much as possible, and use an air conditioner or purifier to filter out allergens.

7. Water Damage

Water damage is caused by heavy rains, leaks, flooding, and other water-related issues.

It can damage your home’s structure, ruin possessions, and cause mold growth. To avoid water damage, repair any leaks right away.

Inspect your home regularly for signs of water damage such as water stains, peeling paint, and mold growth.

If you live in an area prone to flooding, take precautions such as sandbagging and elevating possessions.

8. Heat-Related Illnesses

In extreme heat, your body overheats, leading to heat exhaustion or heat stroke..

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include headaches, nausea, and dizziness. Stay indoors in air-conditioned areas as much as possible.

Drink plenty of fluids, and avoid alcoholic beverages.

Also, wear loose, light-colored clothing, take breaks often if you must be outdoors, and avoid strenuous activity.

Taking Action Prolongs Your Investments Life

As you will realize, awareness enables you to take care of your home during the summer months.

You’ll prevent costly damages while your family enjoys the season.

You’ll also prolong the lifespan of your home and other expensive investments such as the AC and save money in the long run.
