Benefits of Using Curtains to Create Height

Using curtains in your living room is a simple and inexpensive way to give the impression of height. While furnishings and decorations can help draw attention to the walls, different curtain designs can manipulate how a room appears to be vertically and spatially organized. Curtains can effectively add a sophisticated, tall atmosphere to any home.

Using curtains to give the impression of greater height has the following advantages:

  • Creating an illusion of spaciousness – Curtains create the illusion of more space than there is by drawing the eye from ceiling to floor. As a result of less clutter, a sense of grandeur is created that would not be possible with just wallpaper or paint.
  • Adding texture – Curtains can give your walls more texture because they come in a wide range of materials, fabrics, and designs. When used carefully with delicate pastel paints or wallpaper, heavier velvets, for example, will help complement lighter walls while metallic textures will give your room volume and depth.
  • Highlighting architectural features – By drawing attention to certain elements of your home’s original structure, such as the moldings around the windows, you can fully utilize them.
  • Reducing noise – They provide excellent acoustic insulation for any sound throughout your room which greatly reduces any outside from entering it.

Choosing the Right Curtains for Your Living Room

The style, size, and color decisions you make when using curtains to give the appearance of height in your living room are crucial. Your curtains can draw the eye upwards and give the space a spacious, airy look that adds depth and sophistication by establishing a unified visual theme.

Choosing floor-length curtains is one of the best ways to add a sense of verticality. They not only increase the amount of wall space that can be seen, but they also give your living room a refined look that extends well above eye level. Choose short or mid-length curtains that still reach sufficiently low to the ground if full-length drapes aren’t possible in your room due to the height of the ceiling or the placement of the furniture.

When hanging curtains close enough to draw attention upwards it’s important to ensure their width is large enough to provide full coverage across the window width; this will encompass more wall space and eliminate any structural flaws that detract from their overall impact.

Vibrant-colored drapes are a great way to make a greater impact with plainer walls while dark neutral shades also provide plenty of interest while still allowing other aspects of décor take center stage.

How to Hang Curtains to Maximise Height

Wrought iron or decorative arches, which are heavier rods, give rooms visual weight and a sense of sophistication. Consider using tension rods for a straightforward and elegant window treatment frame in small rooms or windows.

Rooms can look taller than they actually are by choosing curtains that reach all the way to the floor. If desired, additional decorations like fabric swatches or valences can be layered to add depth and interest and improve the perception of height.

It is usually preferable to mount rods close to the ceiling rather than close to the top trim because doing so adds even more height by avoiding the need for hardware to secure the rod to the wall.

Additionally, it is best to draw panels past (not on) the window trim when placing them on either side of a window. This removes additional obstacles that could appear at eye level as “cutouts,” shortening your space.

How to Accessorise to Enhance Height

Picture frames should be hung as high up the wall as they can go without looking out of place in order to give the impression of vertical depth. By reflecting light off the walls and creating the illusion of more space, mirrors also aid in creating this feeling.

You can add accessories like floor lamps and table lamps with legs that extend up toward the ceiling in addition to hanging artwork and mirrors. This tactic produces an illusion that directs attention upward and gives the impression of more space.

To draw attention upwards, you can also try setting up your furniture in a way that creates distinct lines that go straight up. Once they are positioned behind you, sofa tables or console tables make excellent tools for this.

Conclusion

A living room’s window treatment can make the difference between a small, dark room and a spacious, light-filled room with a high ceiling.

For various visual effects, curtains can be hung in multiple layers and higher than typical treatments on the wall. When designing your curtains, think about how they will complement or contrast with the colours of your furniture and walls. You can add height while still enhancing the amount of natural light that enters the space with careful planning.
