How to Use a Standing Desk: Make Standing More at Work Easier for You
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

So you have decided to invest in a standing desk and make the lifestyle shift of standing more at work—that’s awesome! Breaking your sedentary lifestyle is one of the most effective ways to live healthier, enjoy pain-free days, and become more productive at work. And with a standing desk, you make this lifestyle shift easier and more natural, all while enjoying many other benefits.

Standing desks have become one of the leading solutions to the sedentary lifestyle in the workplace, and many offices today have started to convert their spaces ergonomically by replacing fixed desks with adjustable desks. If you are just starting in the sit-stand lifestyle, you might be interested to know how to make standing easier and how to maximize your new desk. Read on to find out more.

Contents

  • 1 Standing Desk Adjustment
  • 2 Desk Capacity Check
  • 3 Desk Accessories: Monitor Arms, CPU Holder
  • 4 Proper Feet and Leg Care
  • 5 Choosing the Right Desk

Standing Desk Adjustment

One of the most important things to do to ensure that the desk will deliver its promised benefits is to set it to the correct height. On the desk, you will find a keypad that you can use to set your desk to the correct standing height and sitting height. This is a memory keypad that remembers the height you set so that the next time you use it, you only need to press one button to adjust the desk to the said height—easy, hassle-free, and disruption-free!

To set the correct desk height, the easiest guide is your elbow. The desk should be at elbow height, allowing the elbows to be positioned at a 90-degree angle from the floor.

Desk Capacity Check

Each standing desk has a set maximum weight lifting capacity, so choose one that can handle and carry all the materials you need to place on it. Similarly, find one with enough surface area for all your equipment—your monitor and laptop, your files and notebooks and pens, maybe even your potted plant.

Depending on your available space and the surface area you need, you may choose between a rectangular or an L-shaped desk. You may also maximize your space with some desk accessories.

Desk Accessories: Monitor Arms, CPU Holder

If you need more space for additional equipment, there are several ergonomic accessories you can consider. If you are using more than one monitor, for instance, you can consider investing in monitor arms to free up space on your standing desk. This set of arms clamps to the edge of your desk. They can hold up to two or three monitors, depending on the design, and can free up significant space on your desk.

Similarly, you can mount a CPU holder on the desk so that you can have a space for your unit. No clutter, more space for you! For your files, you may get a rolling file cabinet to keep them in one place and keep your desk tidy and organized.

Proper Feet and Leg Care

One of the first things you need to consider when starting with the sit-stand lifestyle at work is yourself, specifically your body. Make sure you give it time to adjust to this new lifestyle. It may not be easy at first, but constant practice and proper body care should help you make the transition smoother.

First, consider investing in an anti-fatigue mat. This is a soft mat with knobs and ridges designed to absorb the strain from standing, allowing you to stand more comfortably. The ridges massage and stimulate your soles and heels both for health and comfort. Second, use proper footwear. This means switching between heels and flat shoes as needed, especially if you plan to stand more throughout the day. High heels will double the strain, and this might make it harder for you to continue with standing more. And third, find a good footrest. This is for when you are sitting, to allow you to elevate your feet so that you can rest them properly.

Choosing the Right Desk

Now that you have read about some of the things to consider when making the shift to a sit-stand lifestyle, let’s move on to one of the most important parts of this journey—choosing the right standing desk.

The right desk will have powerful motors powering it, a high-grade frame, and a high-quality and stylish tabletop, features that you will find in the MotionGrey Standing Desk. Bosch motors make the desk move from one height to another swiftly, all while allowing it to carry more weight without wobbling. And all these benefits are offered at a lower and more affordable cost compared to other standing desks in the market. Head over to MotionGrey to find more high-quality options.
