How Home Décor Can Help With Symptoms of Depression

Depression is a mental health disorder that can seemingly take over your whole life.

While it can be difficult to find the motivation and energy to do it, it’s still important to make an effort to improve your mental health.

One way to do this is by changing up your home décor. Believe it or not, your environment has a large impact on how you feel.

In this article, we’ll explain how you can spruce up your home décor and the impact it has.

Contents

Mimic Nature

According to an article by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, bringing the outdoors in can help encourage healing from injuries.

Multiple studies have found that flowers can help reduce the time it takes to recover from an injury, which is why so many people give flowers to patients in hospitals.

Although depression is not a physical injury, it’s not unrealistic to test if they help heal your brain as you fight depression.

The beauty of flowers can also lift your mood according to the same article.

Patients who are around plants and flowers tend to be happier and more positive.

It can be hard to believe plants can do so much for our mental and physical health, but the bright and happy colors of plants can make a big impact.

Bring in the Light

If you suffer from seasonal depression, consider investing in a lightbox.

These lights were designed to help patients with seasonal affective disorder, otherwise known as SAD.

This is where a patient’s mood drops significantly during the winter or when it’s a rainy season.

The lights mimic the light of the sun and tell your brain to produce more serotonin.

If you severely struggle with SAD, consider purchasing lamps for around your home where you spend time during the day.

Don’t put them in your bedroom in the evening, as it can tell your brain it’s time to be awake and disrupt your circadian rhythm.

Another way to bring in the light is by investing in regular lamps and using LED light bulbs.

Some homes just aren’t designed to have a lot of sunlight during the day.

Or, if you live in an environment where it’s dark or gloomy out during the day, your home can feel like a cave.

So, adding some lamps in the darker corners of your home may help.

LED light bulbs are the best for brightening the space because they take up less energy, and their cool white tone can mimic the sun as well.

Use Color in Your Home

Does your home only have one primary color? If so, it may feel a bit stale.

To help you brighten it up a bit, consider adding some colors that make you feel happy and comfortable.

There is an entire field of therapy dedicated to the use of color called chromotherapy.

The theory of this therapy is color can make a noticeable change on our moods.

According to an article from WebMD, blues, greens, and lavender shades can help you feel more relaxed and calmer.

On the other hand, reds and yellows are stimulating.

They can encourage connection, conversation, and even hunger, all of which patients with depression can struggle with.

Don’t Overlook Therapy

If you are struggling with depression and haven’t started attending therapy, you should do so.

Therapy can be very beneficial for patients with depression.

And, its effectiveness is more heavily researched than home décor, so it will likely be more beneficial for you.

The two in unison with each other can help you tremendously.

If you aren’t sure if you have depression, consider taking a depression test. Most tests can be very insightful and can help you understand why you feel the way you do.

However, the only way to be certain if you have depression is if you see a licensed counselor or therapist.

They may be able to give you more information on how to make your home more uplifting as well.
