Many people struggle to keep their attic clean and organized. Maybe you’re one of them. But who can blame you – we fully understand the struggle.

While the attic can be your best storage space, it can also quickly become a disaster area if left unattended.

You need a methodological approach, and this post shows you how you can effectively clean and organize your attic.

Why Is This Important?

There are several reasons why you need a clean and organized attic.

First off, it enables you to keep track of your attic’s overall state: are there structural damages that need fixing?

Are items difficult to locate? Is there a wildlife infestation problem in your attic? All these can only be resolved with a clean and organized attic.

Steps for a Clean and Organized Attic

1. Create a plan

Before you get to work, ask yourself: what am I trying to achieve with a clean and organized attic?

Do you want to create functional storage space or carve out a fantastic playroom?

Having a goal in mind will inform the best approach to achieve your objectives.

2. Take Everything Out of the Attic.

The highest floor of your house isn’t always the easiest to clean. Try taking everything out of the attic before you commence to ease your burden.

By decluttering the attic space, you can better sort items out.

3. Inspect Your Attic

Next up, you want to inspect your attic for structural damage or wildlife infestation signs.

If you’ve heard animal noises in the attic before, it’s time to look out for signs of an infestation – animal droppings, nests, etc.

What’s more, look for potential entry holes into the attic.

4. Resolve Wildlife Issues (if There Are Any)

If you’re dealing with a wildlife infestation, you must eliminate the nuisance animal.

Your best bet is to turn to a professional wildlife company like Wildlife X Team.

5. Clean Your Attic While It’s Empty

There’s no better time to clean the attic than when it’s empty. Instead of just sweeping, try to vacuum the entire space to capture even the tiniest dust in hard-to-reach places.

6. Perform Necessary Repairs

Now is the time to resolve all damages. This may include replacing the insulation, wires, or even sealing potential entry holes, among many others.

7. Sort Everything Into Categories and Get Rid of Unused Items

It’s time to review and sort everything into categories. That enables you to identify duplicate items and items you longer need.

Such things should be discarded to create more space in your attic.

8. Store Items in Weather-tight Containers and Label Everything

If you want to locate items in your attic easily, it’s best to label everything. Try to be as specific as possible in your labeling.

Use weather-tight containers to protect valuable items from potential leaky roofs.

9. Arrange Specific Items in Specific Zones

For the best results, items with similar purposes should be stored in a specific zone in your attic.

For example, you should keep books within a particular spot while decorations can go into another spot.

10. Items You Use the Most Should Be Closest to the Entrance

It doesn’t make too much sense to have frequently used items at the tail end of your attic.

Doing so makes such things difficult to reach, and you can disorganize the entire space while trying to retrieve them.

That’s why you want to keep the most frequently used objects closer to the entrance.

11. Keep an Inventory

During the organizing process, keep a detailed inventory. That way, you know exactly what items are in your attic and where.

12. Check the Space at Least Monthly.

The number one reason the attic gets cluttered up is that it’s mostly neglected. You must check out your attic space at least once a month.

Wrap Up

Cleaning and organizing your attic is the best way to ensure your attic space is used judiciously while ensuring your attic is in its proper state.

Proper attic organization also helps to identify wildlife infestation promptly, which is necessary for quick resolution before damages escalate.

So what are you waiting for? Clean and organize your attic today!
