Having access to a garden or a landscaped backyard can provide you with lots of opportunities to customize the feeling and presentation of the space.

You will be able to plant different kinds of trees and flowers and shrubs and you can carve out paths, seating areas and even add things like firepits to your outdoor space to make it beautiful and functional.

One of the more often overlooked additions that can make your backyard or garden very peaceful and pleasant, is a water feature.

You will find that the sound of gently running water is more soothing than you might have expected and these water features can provide a beautiful focal piece that will elevate the decoration in your yard with ease.

If you are ready to learn more about adding a water feature to your garden, you need to read on!

Adding a Water Feature to Your Garden or Backyard

When you are thinking about adding this kind of item to your yard or garden space, you will need to consider that there will be some preparation that needs to be done to install it.

These kinds of features need to have a reliable water source powering them and the water will need to be cycled continuously through the water feature through careful plumbing.

This means that you will need to plan to have a quality trench layout that supplies the water to the water feature as well as a trench drain system that handles any water that is spilled while the fountain is in use.

Slippery spaces near fountains and water features will just lead to risk of accidents and standing water near your water features can kill grass or flowers that are planted nearby.

Trench drains with quality trench drain covers are key to making your water feature perform perfectly and provide beauty and peace to your garden without creating a mess or a risk for people to slip and fall.

There are many kinds of trench drains that you can choose to install and some of them are so discreet that you will not be able to see them unless you look closely. The size of the trench drain that you install will depend on the size of the water feature in part.

Kinds of Water Features That You Can Install

You will need to consider the space that you have to work with before you pick your water feature and you might also need to look into the water demand for some of the larger options on the list.

For those who live in places that have drought periods or in desert areas, larger water features might not be practical since their water demand might be too great.

Pond

Probably the lowest-maintenance water feature, this is a common addition to larger yards and gardens.

You will need to dig out the space and usually, it must be lined to prevent losing all the water into the soil around the pond.

You might need to put some fish in the pond and install some water-loving plants to keep the water clear and clean.

This kind of installation does not usually need to cycle water constantly but there will need to be drains and supply trenches dug to take care of it a few times a year at least.

This is the one kind of water feature that is not recommended when you have small children or little dogs that might fall in.

Waterfall or Streambed

If you want to benefit from the sound of gently running water and you like a natural presentation for your water feature, these kinds of installations will give you serenity as well as beauty to look at.

You will need a bit more space to craft this kind of installation than a simple fountain, but if you have the room, this can be a way to elevate your yard or garden to feel very unique and special.

This kind of installation requires a lot of piping to funnel water through the water feature all day long and you will need a collection basin to be installed to capture the water before it is cycled back to the top of the waterfall or streambed to run to the bottom again.

There are many trenching and pump options that you can explore for this kind of water feature depending on the space that you have to work with.

Fountain

This is the most common and the easiest water feature to install. You will usually only need a small series of trenches to protect the piping for this feature and you will likely just need small slot drains or small trench drains to protect against standing water.

Fountains are usually made with all the pump and piping pieces included inside the body or they might have a portion of these items included and you just need to add the pump and a bit of supply line.

Fountains are the best choice if you love the burbling noise of water passing over rocks or if you want a water feature that has some drama and shoots water up into the air.

This is one of the best kinds of water features to pick for smaller yards since these water features are usually mostly self-contained. That being said, there is a wide variety of fountain types and sizes and you might need to provide additional products and trenches for larger fountains.

Adding a Water Feature Can Make Your Yard Beautiful and Unique

Water features are a great way to make sure that your yard looks its best and that the overall feeling of the space is calming and welcoming.

Most people love the sound of running water and if you choose to install a water feature with this function, you will be creating a space that can be calming and soothing any time of year.
