A Brief Guide to Trimming and Pruning Your Trees

If you love landscaping, you’ll adore the value a tree adds to your backyard. For one, trees create shade and a shield from the scorching sun. You can set up a sitting area under the tree to enhance your outdoor experience. Additionally, flowering trees have colorful flowers that add life to your garden.

The last thing you’d want is for the trees to get too bushy and unkempt. They may become an eyesore or harbor some dangerous pests. On that note, you’d want to hire experts in tree service for all your tree-pruning activities. They’re more experienced and knowledgeable on how to handle your trees.

In light of this, here’s a brief guide to trimming and pruning your trees.

Why You Should Trim or Prune Your Trees

If you’re wondering why you need to prune your tree, here’s why:

  • To sustain its health and maximize production: If you notice your tree is infected by pests or tree diseases, trimming off some branches goes a long way toward ensuring you reduce the spread of the infection. If the tree branches rub together, they can easily pass diseases and pests from one branch to another. On the other hand, thinning improves airflow between the trees, which could be beneficial to fruit trees. Note that a thick exterior growth inhibits light from reaching the tree’s interior. Thinning out the dense growth can significantly improve your tree’s overall health.
  • For aesthetic appeal: To reiterate, thick and bushy trees can be an eyesore in your compound. Pruning and trimming help curve the tree into your desired shape, improving its appearance.
  • Safety: Weak and dead tree branches are a safety hazard for your family. In a windy season, the tree branches might fall off unexpectedly and hurt your family members or even passersby. And if the trees grow close to electricity lines, the branches could intertwine with the lines, potentially leading to a fire breakout or electrocution.

Trimming trees is essential in several instances, as outlined above. Consider taking caution when pruning your trees to avoid overdoing it. The tree may not perform best if you prune it too much. You’d want to consult professionals on how to go about it. Better still, hire some tree service for tree pruning and trimming.

When is the Best Time to Trim or Prune Your Trees?

First and foremost, you should only prune when necessary. Secondly, you should only prune a tree in its dormant stage, when most of the nutrients are stored in the stem and roots of the trees. This way, you’ll not affect the intake of nutrients when you trim the branches. Additionally, tree wounds have low sap during their inactive season, reducing the infection rate from insects and pests.

What to Trim or Prune

Before pruning, a branch should exhibit some qualities. These characteristics to watch out for include the following:

  • Dead and dry branches
  • Severely infected branches by tree diseases
  • Sprouts forming on the tree base
  • Crossed limbs that rub together
  • V-shaped crotches
  • Multiple trunks that may later grow into additional links

When pruning trees in your yard, you don’t cut just any other branch. It’s best to examine them first. That way, you cut off the less desirable ones and leave the healthy ones.

Trimming and Pruning Methods

For an effective tree pruning exercise, you should have the following techniques in mind:

  • Cutting at the branch collar: One option is to cut a branch from its base, where it attaches to the stem. Take care not to cut too close to the stem to avoid inflicting wounds on the trees. It’s best for young trees with soft branches.
  • Using the three-cut technique: It involves making the first cut on the side of the stem, avoiding the branch you intend to retain. The second cut goes into the branch above the branch collar. The final cut removes the sub by cutting through the stem. This technique is suitable for overgrown tree branches.

As you ponder the proper technique, you should also consider using the right pruning tools. You’ll avoid making huge wounds on the trees with the right tools.

Laws

In some jurisdictions, pruning or trimming trees individually isn’t allowed. Only licensed firms can do it after obtaining the permit. This is especially true in areas where the trimming exercise can cause massive property damage. Large tree branches can fall on a roof and damage yours or a neighbor’s home. They can also fall on electricity lines and cause short-circuiting, which can cause a fire.

Therefore, it’d be best to check with your local authorities on typical regulations for tree trimming. Otherwise, you may be fined for not complying.

Conclusion

Trimming and pruning your trees are essential if the overgrown branches are a safety hazard. They’re also necessary for aesthetic purposes. However, pruning can damage your trees if not done properly. Hiring professionals guarantees a successful pruning exercise.
